Dementia is a symptom of a disease.  Alzheimer's is one of the diseases that CAUSES dementia.  Just like a runny nose is a symptom of a cold or allergy.

There are over 200 types of dementia.  Alzheimer's accounts for more than all the other dementias combined.

There are currently no medications that stop or cure Alzheimer's.  There are several infusions on the market that make claims, but they all come with severe side effects and are very expensive.

The dementia presented by Alzheimer's and Parkinson's will look very similar.  It is the disease that is different.

There is no "one cause" of dementia, because there are so many types of dementia. However, we now know Alzheimer's type dementia is caused by inflammation.  Inflammation  is most always caused by sugar.

No.  It is not true that everyone gets dementia.  Predominantly, we see Alzheimer's diagnosed after the age of 65. However, it is not normal to get a disease that causes dementia. It is becoming more prevalent in our world, and that is due, in large part, to how we care for our bodies.

Alzheimer's type dementia can be prevented with lifestyle changes. These same lifestyle changes can slow the progression of this disease and many other diseases that affect us.

As Alzheimer's progresses, it eats away at the brain, bit by bit.  By the point of death, when someone has traveled through all the stages of Alzheimer's, two-thirds of the brain has left the body.  It has LITERALLY left the body!  This explains why they can't function in a way that is considered normal.

Late on-set Alzheimer's (diagnosed after the age of 65) is caused by lifestyle. The things we do for our body, and the things we don't do for our body, all affect the health of the brain.

As Alzheimer's progresses, more areas of the brain become damaged. In addition, more parts of the brain leave the body. With that damage and the loss of brain tissue, we also lose memories and abilities.

Constantly searching for your phone is normal!  However, if you find your phone in the freezer, that is NOT normal.

There is a very small genetic component to Late-Onset Alzheimer's (those individuals diagnosed after the age of 65). The great news is that the gene (APOE-4), which causes Alzheimer's, can be turned off, so it is not activated in the body.  This requires lifestyle changes.

A neurologist is your best bet.  If your neurologist does not order extensive bloodwork, brain scans, and cognitive testing, find a new doctor!  If they prescribe medications to prevent or reverse Alzheimer's-type dementia, do your homework.  Learn about those medications.

The word "dementia" refers to a disease that is causing the inability to think clearly. All the non-reversible dementias are caused by diseases or conditions that are fatal.  However, lifestyle changes are promising in slowing that process and even reversing it.
